Theodor (Ted) Hayes, who appears by his dress and the rhetoric posted on his website to be an adherent of the Black Hebrew Israelite belief system, was invited to speak at the Tax Day Tea Party on April 15, 2011 in Oceanside, California in North San Diego County. He is often called the “Rasta Republican,” due to his dreadlocks and style of dress. Rastafarianism is another branch of the Black Nationalist movement. The worship of black race is a common element of the various Black Nationalist sects and the Rastafaris worshiped Haile Salassie, the emperor of Ethiopia, as the “Christ,” a God on earth, much as fellow Black Nationalist, Barack Obama, was declared to be a Christ figure, by Louis Farrakhan and others of his ilk.
Black Hebrew Israelite-ism can be considered to be part of the greater Black Nationalist movement, whose members generally worship certain leaders as gods and see white society as satanic or literally the Devil, doomed to destruction in the black nationalist version of the End Times, when the black (non-white) races will rebel against white rule. The doctrine is much like a Jewish version of Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam. Just like the NOI cooperates with white liberals, some Black Hebrew and other black nationalists groups have cooperated with white conservatives and even white nationalists/racists.
My own experience has been that the great majority of Tea Partiers do not have any racial animus at all, they welcome those of other races and ethnic groups to their events. For that reason, I believe that they should understand the background of Black Hebrew-ism/black nationalism. In fact, most Tea Partiers seem to have a complex about criticism of individuals of other races, even when the criticism of them is deserved.
One cannot read Ted Hayes’ mind, of course. However, a speaker, who dresses and speaks like a Black Hebrew Israelite at a Tea Party and uses Hebrew Israelite rhetoric on his website, is much like a speaker at a civil rights meeting wearing white sheets and a pointy white hood. There is a history of extreme racism against whites — and especially against white Jews — in the Black Hebrew Israelite cult movement, as in the general black nationalist movement. If anyone has the audacity to point this out, however, of course Ted Hayes and others immediately play the race card, just like Obama’s minions do.
The event was organized by “Stop Taxing Us,” an activist group, headed by Gary Gonsalves. This note provides some background information on the Black Hebrew Israelite movement and the range of beliefs of Black Hebrew Israel-ism and its different subgroups. The writer has been denounced by Hayes allies, such as Barbara Coe of the California Coalition for Immigration Reform, Chelene Nightingale, former candidate for governor of the American Independent Party, Jeff Schwilk of the San Diego Minutemen and Gary Gonsalves. Threats of violent physical retaliation and personal attack campaigns have also been received from Jeff Schwilk. A link to this page posted on the conservative Free Republic website has been censored by the editors of that site.

Note in the SPLC report below that Black Hebrew Israelite priests generally wear white garb during religious ritual (a symbol of purity) — as Ted Hayes wears in this photo — sometimes accompanied by a red tunic. Hayes wears a scarf with red in it, also symbolic. They are the ceremonial colors of a minister of Black Hebrew Israel-ism. Hayes has referred to himself in the past as a “minister.”
Ben Ammi ben Israel is a African Hebrew Israelite Messiah and head of the “Kingdom of God,” a colony of Black Hebrew Israelites, who moved from Chicago, Illinois to Israel, starting in the 1960’s. Ben Ammi lives in Dimona with his four wives and fifteen children and was proclaimed to be the messiah in this ceremony in 2005. Some Black Hebrews in Israel of the Ben Ammi group have recently been given Israeli citizenship, but they are not recognized as Jews and do not have the “right of return” granted to Jews.
Hayes has stated in public that illegal immigration is equivalent to “genocide” and ethnic cleansing of blacks. These are very extreme racial/ethnic views. Hayes is well-known as a “homeless activist.” It is common for black nationalist groups to recruit from the down-and-out. The Nation of Islam also does that.
In the next clip Hayes race-baits a Jew, whom he implies is racist, merely because his skin is “white” and hair too “straight,” questions his Jewish ancestry — presumably because his skin is white — and calls him a “kapo,” a Jew that worked with the Nazis to exterminate other Jews. Black Hebrew Israelites consider blacks to be the real Jews and “white” Jews to be impostors and apostate. Hayes is letting some Black Hebrew doctrine slip out here.
There are several different groups of Black Hebrews that may have a wide range of beliefs. The examples below are meant to provide an idea of the range of beliefs, what they have in common and how extreme the beliefs can be. It is not meant as a declaration that Ted Hayes accepts all of these beliefs in their most extreme form, but just to show the themes that run though Black Hebrew-ism as a movement. Black Hebrew Israelites are known for their racist, sometimes even genocidal doctrine against whites, including white Jews. Below is a slide show that was made from a podcast by the Southern Poverty Law Center about the Black Hebrew Israelite movement. The text and images are editorial additions to the clip, not part of the original audio of the SPLC podcast.
Mark Potok of the SPLC states in the podcast above that not all Black Hebrew Israelites are racists. But he may be overly generous. He, himself, outlines their fundamentally racist doctrine. The idea that religion should be fundamentally based on race and that blacks are the “Chosen People” is inherently a racist doctrine. There is a broad range in the intensity of the racism. Some Black Hebrew Israelites are just not as overt and outspoken as others about that doctrine. The scene in this clip is from the documentary, “The Gods of Times Square,” which features a group of Black Hebrew Israelite street preachers. Such hateful street preaching is a common activity among ministers of Black Hebrew Israel-ism.

This symbol, greatly exaggerated in size, is commonly used by Black Hebrews to identify themselves.

Hayes, during the Minuteman’s “March through Los Angeles” wore a similar Seal of Solomon around his neck. Hayes apparently wanted blacks, who saw him in this march to think that he is a Black Hebrew Israelite. So, I am not sure why I shouldn’t believe it. It gives him more credibility with some blacks in LA, who will believe that he is a black nationalist and not an “Uncle Tom” when they see his symbol, dress and dreadlocks, while most whites know too little about black history and cult religious traditions to have a clue what it represents.

Some Black Nationalists have a UFO-cult belief system. The doctrine of the Nation of Islam, another Black Nationalist sect, holds that their founder, Fard Muhammad, will return in a giant spaceship to destroy America and the white man. The plot of the movie “Independence Day” is loosely based on this End Times scenario of some Black Nationalists, though in the movie whitey survives. Various groups share this UFO-cult belief, as have some Black Hebrew Israelites, such as the Yahweh ben Yahweh cult. This small group of Black Hebrew Israelites in Las Vegas summoned UFO’s to commemorate the election of fellow Black Nationalist, Barack Obama. The lyrics reflect Black Nationalist teachings that the white man and America will be destroyed by the black race in the End Times, led by a black messiah.
Black Liberation Theology, the doctrine of Obama’s Trinity Church in Chicago is derived largely from the theology of the Nation of Islam. The fundamental beliefs are the same, although the UFO scenario is left out out of the literature of Black Liberation Theology.
Ted Hayes is also associated with the Minutemen, an anti-illegal-immigration group. Below Hayes poses with Chelene Nightingale, former candidate for Governor, who has long been associated with the Minutemen movement. Jeff Schwilk, head of the San Diego chapter of the San Diego Minutemen, threatened to “kick the ass” of this writer, for pointing out that Ted Hayes presents himself in words and dress as an adherent of a branch of the Black Nationalist cult movement, the Black Hebrew Israelites.

Some Black Hebrew sects do have conservative views. The Yahweh ben Yahweh Sect in Miami, is a branch of the Black Hebrew Israelites, with influence from Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam, that was enormously popular with local Republicans for their self-help philosophy, business acumen and conservative values until members were convicted of the murder of as many as twenty-three random whites and black dissidents in the 1980’s, including hacking off the head of a live dissident with a machete.

The so-called “Blacks against Obama” group of “conservatives” was reportedly headed by a former member of the Yahweh ben Yahweh cult, some of whose members slaughtered whites during the 1980’s. “Blacks against Obama” members are shown in this clip protesting Obama during the campaign of 2008.
Not only do few Tea Partiers realize that they have a Black Nationalist as President and what that means for the country, but they do not recognize them in their midst at the own Tea Parties, either, and may even invite them as featured speakers. Black Nationalists, though they may have a racist doctrine, often attempt to manipulate naive unwitting whites to serve their own agenda, as Obama has done so very well. Some play the guilt feelings and political correctness of white folks like a fiddle. People should be wary of the adherents of such black nationalist belief systems, especially, if the member of such a sect happens to be your President and Commander-in-Chief.
It is an old tradition. Some blacks have always danced to the tune of whites, when it is to their benefit in some way. Though sometimes it is hard to tell, who is bamboozling whom.

I’ve encountered some Black Nationalists, not all are openly racist, but I don’t endorse this stuff either. IK?e mainly been around Black Hebrew Israelites and the were actuallu nice to me. I don’t know what they said when I left, but I can’t say I’m worried about it either. I’m not referring to the black church I’ve been around lately either. This was back around 2000-2002. I learn some interesting things I’m tellin’ ya!
It would be naive to think that because someone is nice to your face that they are not racist. Tom Metzger and David Duke may also be nice to people of other races in social situations. Historically, racist blacks have often not openly shown their hate, because they are a minority and there could be retaliation from the majority. Majority white racists have historically been more open about it, presumably, because they have less to fear.

June, what exactly did I say that is false? I am just pointing out that the Black Hebrew Isrealites are, in general, a racist cult religion and that Ted Hayes appears to present himself as a Black Hebrew Israelite, in his dress and his own statements. If he voluntarily associates himself with that religious doctrine, I don’t think that it is slanderous to point out the documented history of certain groups belonging to this religious movement.
This is a classic example of the “Fallacy of Composition” (something is true of the whole from the fact that it is true of some part of the whole). In this case, you said: “Ted Hayes dresses in white garments and is black” then “Black Hebrew Israelites favor white garments (and are black); therefore, “Ted Hayes is a Black Hebrew Israelite”.
Here is another example of the Fallacy of Composition: “United States Marines wear camouflage”. “Al-Qaeda operatives wear camouflage”. Therefore, “Marines are terrorists”. Is that an insane statement? Of course it is as is this whole essay.
You can offer the “looks like a duck; that’s all I said” argument, Sir but you have used fallacious rhetoric as your reasoning behind it. I appreciate the fact that you allow comments to refute your claim that Ted Hayes is a member of this sect. As you can see, he is not.

I just showed you how that argument is illogical. If your intent is to find out if Ted Hayes is a Black Hebrew Nationalist, you have two ways of answering that question:
1- You query, “Yo, Ted! Are you a Black Hebrew Nationalist?” ( I imagine Ted will say, here on this blog, “No”)
2- If you don’t trust his direct refutation, find concrete examples of where Ted Hayes acted on behalf of, or as a member of, or spoke in favor of, or wrote in support of, or was an active participant of Black Hebrew Nationalism

Sarah, Actually, I have seen Hayes before you mentioned it. I believe he was on Hannity a couple of years ago, probably around the time they did the march through LA. I’ve never met Obama, either, or Kim Jong-Il, but that does not mean that I can’t form an opinion of some kind about these folks, does it? It’s pretty obvious that the guy is presenting as some kind of Black Nationalist. People ought to know that and it is legitimate to speculate why and present some background material about what Black Hebrew Israel-ism and Black Nationalism, in general, is all about. Why do you feel the need to try to stifle such information? I have had the HONOR of marching with Ted and the honor of seeing him speak, many times, in 2 States! I have ‘broken bread’ with Ted and can say that Ted is a very upstanding guy who cares about all People, God and Country. Ted understands the intentions of OUR Founding Fathers and tries to protect and preserve that.

As a witness, I can vouch that Ted is not color blind nor a racist by any means as implied in this description. He rallied and danced along with all of us whose skin color was black, white, brown, red and yellow at the Roadrunner Saloon for Border Patrol agent Ignacio “Nacho” Ramos. We were patriots and family united together then as we are now. No amounts of slander can take that away from us.
There have been Black Nationalists & Black Hebrew Israelites who were well accepted by conservative/Republican white groups, such as Yahweh ben Yahweh was in Miami. I am just saying that the Black Hebrew Israelite doctrine is racist. There is such a thing as duplicity, especially if monetary support is involved. Even if you believe Hayes is not racist, which is not always clear from social interactions, the question still remains, why is he presenting himself in the garb and rhetoric of an racist, apocalyptic black nationalist cult religion?
Why do you care what he is wearing? What does it matter? Why do you WANT him to be a racist?
Because I think it is of interest to many people, who the local Tea Party chooses as their allies. The local Tea Partiers, and others across the nation, have a right to know. Why do you feel this should be stifled and there needs to be a cover-up?
The irate people who are making personal attacks here need to understand that I am not obligated to the local, self-proclaimed Tea Party leadership in any way and that they don’t give me orders and can’t stop me from writing the truth as I understand it. The truth is that Hayes is presenting himself in several ways that imply that he is a black nationalist, and/or has been influenced by black nationalism. For that reason it is appropriate to show people a little about what the black nationalist cult religious movement is all about. In the process. people may understand a little better what the black nationalism of Obama’s racist and seditious church in Chicago is about. In general, I don’t believe that black nationalism is well understood in America and should be discussed more openly. Tea Party leadership tends to want to avoid controversial issues, because they generally have personal political agendas that may be damaged by such controversy.
