Art Thompson is right that it is a lot like the Imperial Cult of the Romans and the Greeks, in which the national leader was worshiped as a God. It is a little more subtle today, but exactly the same concept. Self-worship is an instinct in man that goes back to tribal societies and it is still with us today. People do it often unconsciously, without even realizing what they are doing.
